We're back at it. I love it. I missed football so goddamn much.
Ravens @ Chiefs (-3)
Chris Jones once again making a statement with 2 early disruptions.
Zay Flowers with 2 big plays on the first drive.
Rashee Rice has been the Chiefs' sole impactful vector in the passing game.
Playing to their strengths, the Ravens are once again incorporating quarterback options in their playbook.
It's only been 1 drive, but it seems the Ravens have course-corrected and are relying more on the ground game to matriculate the ball. They've learned their lesson from last year's conference championship game.
Xavier Worthy is a literal X-factor for the Chiefs. It's going to take time for teams to effectively strategize against him.
Baltimore's offensive line may be a problem, at least on the right side. They're not holding up consistently.
Baltimore doesn't seem to have many vectors that can work the deep field. Part of that failure can be attributed to Lamar's poor accuracy.
The way the Chiefs are crisply executing on offense is truly praiseworthy. Kudos to Andy Reid.
Isaiah Likely has contributed more on offense than Mark Andrews. It seems like Mark Andrews has lost a step since suffering the injury that kept him out late last season. His confidence isn't there either.
Packers vs Eagles (-2.5)
Kellen Moore is already impressing me as the Eagles offensive coordinator.
The Eagles rushing defense is starting to look suspect.
Josh Jacobs' best days might be behind him.
Horrible play selection on a 2-point attempt by Green Bay.
The addition of Saquon Barkley has been paying dividends already. Glad to see him thriving now that he's behind an offensive line capable of opening lanes.
The slippery turf is creating so many opportunities for both the offense and defense. Interesting.
Rashan Gary has been outstanding on a number of occasions.
Packers have demonstrated an ability to control a mobile quarterback with their defensive front.
Jordan Love's throwing motion concerns me sometimes. It's not rhythmic or as elegant as one would expect from a professional quarterback. His accuracy has been pretty suspect as well.
Vikings @ Giants (+1.5)
So far, everything going as expected. Daniel Jones is not doing well returning from injury, although his willingness to run is encouraging.
Meanwhile, Darnold is finally getting comfortable in the pocket in the second quarter. Is Brian Burns even paying dividends on the massive investment we've gave him?
Sam Darnold has not missed on a single throw yet! He's 10/10 opening the game. Shane Waldron isn't showing much promise so far either. Was he a beneficiary of Mike Vrabel's coaching? Or is Kevin O'Connell working his magic here?
Beautifully designed play on a Minnesota touchdown, but this Giants team has been absolutely disgusting on their defensive coverage. Every level of this Giants defense is failing and failing spectacularly. Even still, I can't quite assign Shane Waldron a chip level yet.
Andrew Van Ginkel has been sensational, end of story.
There's nothing inspiring or admirable about the Giants playbook on offense. It doesn't seem like they're going out of their way to maximize the potential of any of their skill players.
Titans @ Bears (-4.5)
Caleb Williams is going through severe growing pains. It'll be worth keeping an eye on him to monitor his development and see if he grows steadily like C.J. Stroud from last year.
Once again, the inexperience that comes with having a coaching regime led by rookies in all major positions shows its ugly head here. Tennessee should have covered and perhaps even won. But critical mistakes at select moments really doomed them. Meanwhile, the Bears overcame Caleb's ugly debut and won as a team.
Jaylon Johnson has staked his name as an elite coverage player.
Patriots @ Bengals (-7.5)
Once again, Cincinnati is starting out frustratingly slow. What's wrong with them?
I'm seeing quite a bit of sloppiness from them. I don't think a standard of quality is enforced when the Bengals train through camp. Only through losses do they learn to correct bad habits.
Rhamondre Stevenson is a gamer.
Cincinnati looks to be getting hammered on both sides of the trenches. The only player I notice making any significant difference is Trey Hendrickson. And maybe this Peko guy.
Christian Gonzalez is making a case for himself as an elite coverage player.
Saints @ Seahawks (-4.5)
It's interesting to watch Sean Payton's game plan here in action. He's playing it very safe, smartly so. Bo Nix's accuracy isn't quite there yet. Seattle has had a number of opportunities in the first half alone to intercept the ball.
Seattle's undermanned offensive line is hurting them against Denver's respectable pass rush.
Zach Allen making a name for himself as a pass rusher for Denver. Jonathan Cooper, Baron Browning, and Nik Bonitto are also names worth watching.
If Jaxon Smith-Njigba finally becomes a dependable vector in his own right, then Seattle has four certified vectors on offense. Expect some great things from them this season, especially as Mike Macdonald begins leaving a footprint on the defense.
A green quarterback really limits the playbook here. Seattle's secondary is just playing zone coverage while the front seven plays the line of scrimmage aggressively. It's a strategy working spectacularly as Bo Nix has issues connecting with receivers on the intermediate and deep parts of the field.
Bo Nix can run fast and smart.
Cowboys @ Browns (-2)
Dak Prescott is already playing at a high level.
Recruiting Zeke as a goal-line tailback was a smart move by the Cowboys organization.
Cleveland's offensive line is a monumental liability. Combined with a white-chip quarterback, Cleveland's offense was destined to be a disaster. We're seeing the same thing with the Giants as well.
DeMarcus Lawrence has made his presence known on a number of occasions today.
Rams @ Lions (-4.5)
Little bizarre to see this game be as low scoring as it is compared to the postseason match from last year. All the more strange when it's the defenses that have the most changing pieces from last season onward.
Jamison Williams is a speed demon when he's on one.
The speed of this Lions defense is impressive. Going into the fourth quarter, the Rams have yet to really hit a big play. The secondary is doing just enough to hold up in coverage. It also helps that Aidan Hutchinson is wreaking havoc on the left side of that offensive line.
It may be worth watching this game again to see if the Rams were jamming the flat and intermediate areas with defenders in order to stifle Detroit's passing attack. Both Sam LaPorta and Amon-Ra St. Brown had pedestrian outings, so that may be why. Then again, it may have been complacency. Not too sure yet...
Texans @ Colts (+3)
Diggs is looking like he's getting along well with the team so far. It'll be a matter of time before that changes.
Shane Steichen likes to throw up the tempo every now and then with his style of offense.
Anthony Richardson's ability to run has earned him designation as an elite vector. Add Jonathan Taylor on top of that and the Colts have one of the league's scariest rushing attacks.
Jets @ 49ers (-4.5)
The 49ers have so many weapons on offense, it's almost enviable. Kudos to Shanahan and John Lynch for building such an admirable roster.
The Jets have great players at level of their roster. But talent isn't enough if the defensive line is missing juice. And outside of Quinnen Williams, it looks questionable that the Jets have anybody else they can depend upon to rush the passer. Purdy was carving up this defense all day with some brilliant dropback passing.
Deebo Samuel, Jauan Jennings, and Brandon Aiyuk are all vectors. And it doesn't matter who totes the ball in San Francisco, it seems like any rusher can generate production behind that offensive line. Add Kyle Juszczyk and you have five notable vectors on offense. Ricky Pearsall may actually serve as valuable depth here.
The Jets rushing defense needs to be called into question, although perhaps San Francisco's ground game was way too much for them.
Steelers @ Falcons (-3.5)
The Falcons are surprisingly running a different style of offense not in line with the McVay-Shanahan system. It seems Zac Robinson wants to run his offense almost exclusively out of pistol. Kirk Cousins does not seem all too comfortable operating out of the pistol, although he is coming fresh off an injury and a major payday, so who knows...
Atlanta's defensive line needs a bit more work. Grady Jarrett was sensational, but Matthew Judon hasn't really demonstrated much in terms of disruptions.
Kudos to Pittsburgh for being as physical as they are normally. No team in the league practices football tougher than Pittsburgh and the results show on the field.
T.J. Watt is damn near unstoppable.
LESSONS
Rookie quarterbacks and quarterbacks returning from injury cannot be trusted. On the rookie end, Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Bo Nix both had poor games. And when it comes to injured veterans returning into action, Joe Burrow, Deshaun Watson, and Daniel Jones had depressing outings, even by their own standards. Justin Herbert may have had a bad outing as well, I need to watch his game.
